Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The history of rendering shows that current uses for rendered protein are a result of value-adding research. Feed nutritionists discovered how to use this formerly very low value by-product as an important component of formulated livestock feed. Today the feed market is mature and has been severely limited in some parts of the world. Researchers are again examining rendered protein to find new uses and add value. On-going projects include use of hydrolyzed rendered protein in industrial fermentations, production of bioactive peptides, and production of bio-based plastics.
