Technical Abstract: THE EXPANSION OF JUNIPER SPECIES INTO GRASSLAND AND SHRUB-STEPPE COMMUNITIES HAS OCCURRED ACROSS VAST AREAS AND AT A GLOBAL SCALE. IN MANY CASES WE HAVE DEVELOPED A REASONABLE UNDERSTANDING OF THE ECOLOGICAL OR SUCCESSIONAL CHANGES THAT ARE LIKELY WITH THE EXPANSION. IMPACTS ON EVAPO-TRANSPIRATION (ET) AND WATER BUDGETS IN GENERAL ARE NOT SO CLEARLY DEFINED. SUCCESSION FROM GRASSLAND OR SHRUB-STEPPE TO JUNIPER WOODLAND CLEARLY IMPACTS VEGETATION STRUCTURE AND A HOST OF PARAMETERS THAT INFLUENCE ET. AMONG THE FACTORS TO CONSIDER ARE: LEAF AREA INEX, TRANSPIRATION RATE AND AMOUNT, SEASONAL TIMING OF TRANSPIRATION, MICROCLIMATE CHANGES, INTERCEPTION OF PRECIPITATION, SNOW DISTRIBUTION, AND SURFACE HYDROLOGY. MANY OF THESE FACTORS ARE LINKED.
