Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This review summarizes evidence that vitamin D insufficiency is very common, that vitamin D insufficiency has adverse consequences (poor muscle performance, increased risk of falling and more fractures), that current recommended intakes are inadequate for most adults, and that an intake of 800 to 1000 I U per day is needed for the average adult to reach optimal vitamin D status.
