Many species are agricultural and ornamental pests, while others have been implicated as vectors of plant viruses. They are regularly intercepted at quarantine facilities at the various ports of entry into the United States. Because of their small size and potential for causing agricultural damage, great care must be given to identifying these insects to species level. This paper has an identification key to 27 species in two genera likely to be encountered in shipments from South America. At least one of these species may have economically important impact, were it to be introduced into this country. This paper provides a useful resource to the USDA/APHIS port identifiers, thrips researchers, and state inspectors. Technical Abstract: Twenty-seven species of Hydatothrips and Neohydatothrips occurring in South America are reviewed. Five new species of Neohydatothrips are described. An additional species from Asia, Neohydatothrips samayunkur Kudo, a pest of marigolds and various crops, has been transported via commerce into Europe, Africa, and now South America. |
