Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The ornamental horticulture or “green” industry continues to be one of the fastest growing segments of agriculture in the U.S., ranking behind only corn and soybeans in total cash receipts. The Floral and Nursery Plants Research Unit (FNPRU), of the U.S. National Arboretum, is the largest research group in the nation dedicated exclusively to solving problems related to ornamental horticulture. The strength of this research lies in the broad-based, multi-disciplinary team approach that characterizes the research. With scientific expertise in breeding, genetics, pathology, taxonomy, production, and biotechnology, the FNPRU research effort as a whole is significantly greater than the sum of its parts. Recent accomplishments and current research efforts are highlighted.
