Experimental Dermatology. 16:45-70. Interpretive Summary: The development and function of subcutaneous fat cells is important to many species including swine. In particular, fat cells located around hair follicles may have an important role in the capacity of the animal to maintain body temperature. Enhancing fat cell development around hair follicles could improve regulation of body temperature in very young pigs. Technical Abstract: The development and potential function and physiological role of subcutaneous fat cells is reviewed in the context of several species including swine. The function or role subcutaneous fat cells is very dependent on species and location within subcutaneous tissues. Fat cells located around hair follicles may have an important role in the thermogenic function of hair and skin. |
