Interpretive Summary: The caterpillar-like, plant-feeding larvae of sawflies cause millions of dollars damage to forests, agricultural crops, and ornamental plantings. No comprehensive state lists of sawflies are available for these insects. This survey of the sawflies that occur in Virginia, representing the study of many thousands of specimens, resulted from intensive sampling of numerous different sites across the state. The results confirm records for 346 species and 25 potential species in Virginia. The species are listed with county records, recorded host plant data, and pertinent references. This list will form a benchmark reference for scientists working with these important plant-feeding insects and Federal and state agriculture personnel attempting to regulate and identify damaging insects.

Technical Abstract: Confirmed records for 346 species of sawflies in 11 families are cited for Virginia. The results are based on extensive Malaise trap collecting at several sites, mainly in northern Virginia, and data from museum specimens. A list of 25 potential species likely to occur in Virginia is given. County records and recorded host plants are given for each species.
