Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Gastrointestinal problems occur frequently in girls with Rett syndrome. Constipation is a common problem in girls with Rett syndrome because of their neurological abnormalities. Research studies to better understand the abnormalities of large bowel function in our girls with Rett syndrome have not been performed. Treatment of constipation in our girls with Rett syndrome should be initiated early at the first hint of symptoms and should be maintained consistently to have a sustained effect.
