Interpretive Summary: The Barley Genetics Stocks Database provides information on hundreds of morphological markers. We recently characterized and located 27 semidwarf mutants in barley. Genetic Stocks descriptions have been developed for each of the 18 unique genetic loci identified by these mutants. Each description provides inheritance, physical characteristics, and the origin of the mutation. While many of the semidwarf lines have undesirable traits like reduced kernel weight, several had acceptable yields and other traits. This information, now available in the database, can be used to select the best semidwarf mutants for use in breeding new barley semidwarf varieties.

Technical Abstract: The Barley Genetics Stocks Database provides information on hundreds of morphological markers. We recently characterized and mapped 27 brachytic (brh) semidwarf mutants in barley. The brachytic lines were evaluated for ten phenotypic traits: height, awn, peduncle, rachis internode length, leaf length and width, lodging, yield, number of kernels per spike and kernel weight. Genetic Stocks descriptions have been developed for each of the 18 unique genetic loci identified by these mutants. Each description provides locus symbols, inheritance, physical characteristics, and the origin of the mutation. While many of the brh lines have undesirable traits like reduced kernel weight, several had acceptable yields and other traits. This information, now available in the database, can be used to select the best semidwarf mutants for use in breeding new barley semidwarf varieties.
