Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Progress in an indica base-broadening program is.documented. To date, 16 improved indica germplasms, indica-1 to indica-16, have been developed at the DB NRRC. These come from three sources: 1), indica- 1 to indica-9 from crossing a very early Chinese cultivar which has grain quality unsatisfactory for the US, with six late maturing IRRI germplasms which have grain quality similar to US standards, followed by intensive selection for early maturing recombinants with satisfactory grain quality. 2) indica-10 to indica-13 from induction of early flowering mutants in the high grain quality IRRI germplasms which are themselves about a month too late for the US. 3) indica-14 to indica-16 from induction of early flowering mutants from the highly blast disease resistant cultivar Oryzica llanos cinco from Colombia. Next steps will be to intercross the early IRRI mutants with the Colombia mutants.
