Interpretive Summary: Many gin stand designs have been used to separate lint cotton from cottonseed at cotton gins since the late 1950's. However, these ginning systems offer varying levels of performance and fiber quality, and ginners can not easily balance these factors against the needs of their gins. In order to help resolve this problem, this report compiles the significant gin stand developments and research conducted on the ginning of cotton fiber at cotton gins since 1958. It describes how various systems use combinations of ginning features and settings to satisfactorily gin cotton. The information and appraisal of the available systems should prove helpful to engineers planning new designs and to gin owners in selecting gin stands for their gins.

Technical Abstract: This paper reviews and complies most of the significant developments and research conducted on saw gin stands for cotton gins since about 1958. It describes the design and operation of various types and models of saw gin stands, and gives an appraisal of gin stand designs and settings that may be most useful at current cotton gins. These include models that utilize 79 to 252 saws, 11 ¾ to 18-inch saw diameters, one or two saw cylinders, and ginning rates of 4 to 15 bales/h.
