Citation: Thompson, F.C., Marinoni, L. 2004. Copestylum circumdatum (walker) (diptera: syrphidae). a redescription, with lectotype designations and new synonym. Entomological News. 114: 218-224

Interpretive Summary: Flower flies are an important element of most terrestrial ecosystems. The adults (flies) are pollinators, and the larvae (maggots) range from predators of plant pests to detrivores and filter-feeders which re-cycle environmental nutrients. Copestylum circumdatum, a widespread flower fly of the Neotropics, whose maggots are filter-feeders in sap runs in tropical trees, is redescribed and illustrated. This information will be useful to scientists studying flies, conservationists assessing the health of the environment, and to action agency personnel charged with identifying flies.

Technical Abstract: Copestylum circumdatum (Walker) (Diptera: Syrphidae) is redescribed. Lectotypes are designated for two names and one new synonym is proposed (Volucella mus Williston 1888 = circumdatum Walker 1857).
