Research Project: Northwest-Adapted Barleys for Resistance to Stem Rust (UG99)

Location: Forage Seed and Cereal Research Unit

Project Number: 2072-21000-054-001-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 24, 2015
End Date: Sep 23, 2020

Objective:
Produce populations and inbred lines of Northwest-adapted barleys crossed with sources of genes for resistance to the Ug99 stem rust pathogen.

Approach:
Make crosses between Ug99-resistant barley lines and various market types of barley adapted to Pacific Northwest production. Conduct field evaluations of F2 through advanced inbred lines for agronomic traits including cold tolerance and resistance to local diseases. Superior plants, families and lines will be advance to the next generation for further testing. The materials resulting from this NACA will be available for further development and testing to select materials that are locally adapted and have resistance to Ug99. This NACA supports research conducted under National Program (NP) Number303, Plant Diseases. The research is conducted as part of ARS research project 2072-22000-042-00D, augmented by the FY10 and FY17 Program Increases for Research to Strengthen Grain Disease Research to Reduce World Hunger.
