Research Project: Application of Agroecosystem Models and Simulation Studies to Achieve Efficient Use of Water and Nutrients for Agricultural Sustainability

Location: Genetics and Sustainable Agriculture Research

Project Number: 6064-21660-001-004-N
Project Type: Non-Funded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 1, 2015
End Date: Jul 31, 2020

Objective:
To conduct field trials and simulation studies on greenhouse gas emissions, water and nutrients management in agroecosystems in Mississippi State, USA and Xinjiang, China.

Approach:
A cooperative field and modeling joint effort will be conducted between USDA-ARS Genetics and Sustainable Agriculture Research Unit (GSARU), Mississippi State, MS and Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (XIEG), Urumqi, Xinjiang 830011, China. Plots of cotton, corn and soybean will be fertilized with broiler litter and inorganic nitrogen fertilizer and irrigated at different rate and timing. Soil properties, soil and plant nutrients concentration, nutrient and water balance, greenhouse gas emission (GHG), yield, crop physiological traits, biomass, leaf area index, root biomass and depth will be measured over time and weather data will be recorded in the two diverse climatic zones, Mississippi State, USA and Xinjiang, China.
