Objective:
To 1) provide information concerning the impact of forage quality on beef cattle production systems’ emission of greenhouse gases; and 2) evaluate native grass grazing systems under different management options on greenhouse gas emissions by cattle.
Approach:
Greenhouse gas emission by livestock is a major research focus at the USDA-ARS Southern Plains Range Research Station. Identifying technologies that mitigates greenhouse gas emission without compromising livestock production is paramount to a healthy ecosystem. New analytical techniques to measure the greenhouse gas emission by grazing cattle appears promising, but is untested against techniques that are acceptable to the scientific community. Evaluation of these novel technologies will provide scientist with tools to allow them to answer questions regarding the impact of grazing livestock on greenhouse gas emission and climate change. This research will employ basic agronomic, animal performance, and plant and animal physiology techniques.
