The objectives of this research is to 1) develop an improved understanding of nutrient and sediment transport, transformations, and the hydrology in an irrigated landscape; 2) validate model simulations of nutrients and sediment transport in irrigated agricultural land in the Little River Ditches and Lower St. Francis basin using both edge-of-field and in-stream monitoring data; 3) analyze the effects of existing and emerging conservation practices in crops unique to this region and under irrigated water management conditions; and 4) evaluate the impacts of drought and temperature or precipitation changes on hydrology and water management strategies to enhance resilience of agricultural systems and balance field and watershed-scale water quality and availability impacts.
Researchers will use field-collected water quality and quantity data from the edge-of-field and in-stream locations to help inform existing hydrology and water quality models. Two locations will be used for this purpose: one is a watershed dominated by cotton production and the other by rice/soybean production. Field sensors will be deployed to measure and collect water samples for laboratory analysis and quantify water leaving the system.
