Objective:
(1) Link sero-positive wild and domestic animals to find reservoirs during inter-epidemics. (2) Link insect collections to sero-positive domestic and wild animals. This may help identify the biting pressure and the insect species feeding on domestic animals and most likely to transmit disease.

Approach:
Scope of work: K-DVS will be collecting blood samples from approximately 52 buffalo and 100 cattle/sheep/goats from three areas: Nakuru and two places in Naivasha. In the Nakuru and Naivasha locations where there are only wild animals, light traps will be used to determine what mosquitos are feeding on the animals. The second animal blood collection location in Naivasha is an interface between domestic and wild animals. Therefore it is the most important location for this project. At these sites mosquitoes and sand flies will be collected from the cattle/sheep/goat areas with light traps (at least 3 trap nights per animal collection). Larval samples will be collected in the surrounding areas. Mosquitoes will be collected off the cattle/sheep/goats with aspirators (at least 2 animal collections for 3 nights - 6 animal collection nights). From the specimens collected, determinations of the feeding species, the biting pressure of each species, and where they are feeding on the animals (top, bottom, front or back surface areas of the animal).
