Research Project: Breeding and Genetics of Fusarium Head Blight Resistance in Barley Project Number: 0500-00053-003-80
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: May 13, 2014
End Date: May 12, 2015

Objective:
Project 1: Developing Six-rowed Malting Barley Varieties with FHB Resistance and Low DON: Develop malting barley varieties with enhanced resistance to FHB and lower concentration of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON). Project 2: Genomic Selection for FHB Resistance in Midwest Six-row Barley: Generate elite breeding lines that combine favorable alleles for disease resistance, agronomic performance, and malting quality as well as describe the effectiveness of genomic selection to improve FHB resistance in malting barley.

Approach:
Project 1: A comprehensive FHB breeding effort utilizing greenhouse for crossing and single-seed advance, extensive field trials for FHB evaluation, various uses of markers to improve selection, regional yield and quality testing, and collaborative regional nurseries to evaluate elite breeding lines. Project 2: (1) generate data sets to be used in Genomic Selection (GS) model training; (2) make selections based on GS predictions; and (3) carry out experiments to assess prediction accuracy and gain from selection.
