Research Project: Lowering Input Costs in Corn Production Systems by Promoting Native Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi

Location: North Central Agricultural Research Laboratory

Project Number: 5447-12620-003-10
Project Type: Trust

Start Date: Jul 01, 2014
End Date: Jun 30, 2016

Objective:
Within corn production systems, evaluate cover cropping for reducing P inputs and increasing utilization of soil micronutrients by promoting numbers and diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

Approach:
Establish (or use existing) replicated plots with differing fall cover crop treatments within corn cropping systems at three locations (Brookings, Dakota Lakes, TBD) including a check. Collect and analyze soil samples for physical, chemical, and biological characteristics at critical timepoints, e.g., (i) end of fall cover crop growth, (ii) before Spring corn planting, (iii) corn plant growth stages, (iv) significant management events. Determine effect of cover crop on corn yield and nutritional content. Determine effect of cover crop on numbers and diversity of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.
