Location: Plant Germplasm Introduction and Testing
Project Number: 2090-21000-028-12
Start Date: Jul 28, 2014
End Date: Apr 30, 2016
The USDA National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) special lettuce collection of 250 genotyped pure lines will be screened in the greenhouse for resistance to bacterial leaf spot with screening procedures newly developed and refined in the Florida laboratory. Three replications of ten seedlings from each accession and an isolate of the pathogen from Florida will be used in the screening experiment. The cultivar ‘Little Gem’, which was reported as high resistant to the California isolate of bacterial leaf spot, will be used as a resistant control. Resistance evaluation will be rated on a 1-4 rating scale of disease severity two weeks after inoculation at the 6- to 8-leaf stage. Accessions showing high resistance the Florida isolate will be challenged by a California isolate to see if the reaction is different. Experimental data and representative images will be uploaded to the GRIN (Germplasm Resources Information Network)-Global database. Co-authored research paper will be published in scientific journal.
