Sorption isotherm experiments will be conducted to determine sorption capacities of black carbon, biochars, and clay minerals for representative pharmaceuticals and hormones (e.g., lincosamides, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, ionophores, and hormones). Sorption models will be developed by mechanistically associating pharmaceutical and hormone sorption by component geosorbents to the sorption of pharmaceuticals and hormones in whole soils. Laboratory-scale rainfall simulations to investigate the biochar/Chemicals of Environmental Concern (CECs) on runoff water quality will be performed as follow: Soil amended with biochar and/or manure containing CECs will be subject to a sequence of 4 rainstorms simulations: 50, 25, 75, and 100 mm/h. The first storm is intended for the soil box to reach a steady state runoff and the four storm sequence is designed to derive a range of data for storm intensity, runoff and sediment production. To compare the amended soils, an unmended control treatment will be used as a basis for sediment losses. Runoff generated will be collected and the collected samples will be analyzed for runoff, sediment production, nutrient, biochar, CECs, dissolve organic carbon.
