To study factors that will improve existing potential (96 gallons ethanol or 120 gallons biogasoline/dry ton wood) of P. elongata by sustainable short rotation biomass production, help understand beneficial genes by molecular dissection of EST library, assist genetic improvement by developing transformation protocols, identify environmentally compatible pretreatment steps like hot water extraction, creating market for secondary products (chemicals like acetic acid, methanol etc., wood and feed pellets, and WPC).

The long term objective of USDA involvement in this project is to develop new WPC employing Paulownia wood flour (PWF) and access their physical and mechanical properties. This will be accomplished by: 1) Developing methods to procure wood flour economically by studying modes of collection, grinding and sieving; 2) Test PWF as bio-fillers with various thermoplastic resins with emphasis on coupling agents, concentration and additives; 3) Ascertain the durability of PWF-WPC under various artificial weathering regimes especially testing moisture, light, temperature, and chemical environments.
