Research Project: Analysis of Feeding Behavior and Feed Intake Data of Lactating Dairy Cows to Optimize Design of Growsafe Feeding Troughs

Location: Animal Genomics and Improvement Laboratory

Project Number: 1245-31320-077-01
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Oct 01, 2013
End Date: Sep 30, 2016

Objective:
The objective of this research is to conduct analysis of dairy cow feeding behavior and feed intake data to develop an optimized trough design for commercial application of Cooperator's radio-frequency identification-based feed intake monitoring of lactating dairy herds in a commercial production setting.

Approach:
ARS will provide the Cooperator with feed monitoring information (including daily intakes and feeding behavior) collected from the BARC Holstein Dairy Herd since 2007 using the Cooperator's Feed Monitoring System installed at the BARC Dairy Unit. The Cooperator will analyze the data to determine optimal bunk dimensions and design for use in lactating dairy cattle. ARS will assist with data interpretation and provide feedback on design parameters for practical use in a commercial production setting.
