Research Project: Biological Control of American Weeds Project Number: 0206-22000-001-38
Project Type: Interagency Reimbursable Agreement

Start Date: Sep 19, 2013
End Date: Sep 18, 2018

Objective:
To develop biological control agents against invasive weeds in the United States.

Approach:
CABI will make exploration trips to the location or locations considered the points of origin of the weeds. There, they will examine what arthropods or pathogens are attacking that plant (i.e., natural enemies). From among the natural enemies of the pest plant, CABI will determine which are significantly damaging to the weed and also likely to be specific for that weed. Working with APHIS regulatory entities, CABI will perform studies of specificity that contribute toward eventual permitting of natural enemies. The work will be conducted from the CABI center in Delemont, Switzerland, but with the potential for activities in other locations.
