Project Number: 1245-21660-004-20
Start Date: Oct 01, 2013
End Date: Aug 30, 2015
ARS will contribute to a team effort involving University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) graduate students, a post-doctoral associate, and UMES and University of Maryland College Park faculty in conducting multiphase research. Initially, research will be conducted at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center composting facility and subsequently at UMES to integrate waste heat from poultry litter composting and poultry house ventilation exhaust air with a system to recycle heat via a heat exchanger while simultaneously capturing ammonia using a semi-permeable membrane acid trap system. Measurements of air flows, biofiltration (particulate and ammonia capture) efficiencies, pneumatic sensors and controls, and solar heat gain in winter from a low-tech roll-down system will be obtained and analysed to determine optimal operational conditions.
