Standard black pyramid traps (1.1 m tall x 0.5 m wide at base x 0.64 cm thick) painted with flat black exterior latex paint and topped with a collection device containing an inverted funnel to promote retention of captured BMSBs will be used in these studies. Traps will be provisioned with: 1) a lure containing the BMSB aggregation pheromone; 2) a 24W compact fluorescent bulb; 3) a combination of these stimuli; or 4) left unbaited (control). All traps also will be provisioned with Hercon Vaportape II (Hercon Environmental, Emigsville, PA) as a killing agent to prevent escape from the traps. These traps will be deployed in the Pacific Northwest with 80 traps. Traps will be sampled weekly. All BMSB adults and nymphs will be removed and counted. All other debris will be removed from the traps. Lures will be changed every two weeks and kill strips changed monthly.
