Location: Foreign Disease-Weed Science
Project Number: 1920-22000-039-08
Start Date: Aug 01, 2013
End Date: Jul 31, 2016
Individual plants will be flagged in the field for study throughout the course of the project. Selection of plants will be based upon data either from previous studies that relied upon molecular information for identification or from artificial greenhouse inoculations by the rust fungus of blackberry accessions from known locations. Morphological information used in previous taxonomic treatments, primarily from Germany, Australia, and the UK, will be collected on a regular basis at different seasons over the course of the study. Records will include descriptive information on plant features, measurements of plant parts, and ratios based upon morphological features, as well as photographs, and herbarium sheets. Focus will be on distinguishing between accessions that have and that do not have blackberry rust caused by P. violaceum.
