1. Leaf tissue will be sampled, DNA extracted and analyzed to determine the O/L genotype. The highest yielding high O/L genotypes will be shelled, treated to break dormancy, and sent to the winter nursery for a seed increase. This will provide enough seed to begin replicated agronomic evaluations the following summer. 2. Recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations that are segregating for economically significant diseases will be phenotyped and genotyped. This will provide data necessary for Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) discovery and genetic mapping of disease resistance quantitative trait loci (QTL) and will enable marker-assisted selection (MAS) for these traits as well as high O/L in existing breeding populations.
