Research Project: Farm Demonstrations of Best Management Practices for Sustainable Beef Cattle Production on Pasture

Location: Forage-Animal Production Research

Project Number: 6440-21000-002-02
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 01, 2013
End Date: Dec 31, 2015

Objective:
The objective of this project is to establish and maintain demonstrations of new technologies as a mechanism to transfer technologies that can improve efficiencies and sustainability of forage-based cattle production.

Approach:
The Kentucky Beef Network will provide pastures, cattle, cattle handling facilities, equipment (tractors, planters, mowers, etc.), and herdsmen at the Eden Shale Farm, located in Owen County, for the conduct of grazing and pasture management demonstrations. The Beef Network will receive advice and assistance from the USDA-ARS Forage-Animal Production Research Unit (FAPRU) in establishment and management of grazed pastures and those used for hay production. Soil and forage sampling and analyses will be the responsibility of FAPRU. These demonstrations will be conducted for enough years to encompass a wide enough range of weather conditions and patters to demonstrate sustainability of a given technology. The Association will facilitate and assist in coordinating field days and extension/industry programs at the demonstration farm to maximize access of cattle producers to the technology transfer activities.
