Research Project: SILENCING RECESSIVE DISEASE RESISTANCE GENES IN VITIS VINIFERA FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF DURABLY RESISTANT CULTIVARS

Location: Grape Genetics Research

Project Number: 8060-21220-006-08
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Sep 01, 2010
End Date: Aug 31, 2012

Objective:
To knock down candiate susceptibility genes in transgenic grapes and assay disease resistance.

Approach:
Under the current grant, we have identified orthologous candidate genes shown to be required for susceptibility to Arabidopsis powdery mildew and are cloning these into silencing constructs. In the proposed grant, we will transiently silence the best Vitis candidate genes corresponding to AtMlo2 and AtPmr6 to assay their roles in susceptibility to powdery mildew. We will then screen existing germplasm for resistance alleles of these genes.
