Research Project: Expedition in French Guiana to Collect Palm Germplasm for Crop Improvement

Location: National Germplasm Resources

Project Number: 1245-21000-227-22
Project Type: General Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 15, 2013
End Date: Mar 15, 2014

Objective:
To obtain germplasm of palm species from French Guiana for conservation in the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System, the Montgomery Botanical Center, and institutions in France.

Approach:
Germplasm of many species of palm will be collected from different locations in French Guiana. All national laws on access to genetic resources in French Guiana will be followed. Germplasm will be collected in the form of seeds and will be documented with locality, latitude and longitude, elevation, plant description, and growing environment. Herbarium voucher specimens will be made as appropriate. APHIS requirements will be followed for importing the germplasm into the U.S. Samples of germplasm and associated documentation will be shared by Montgomery Botanical Center, the U.S. National Plant Germplasm System, French, and French Guianese institutions. Herbarium specimens will be shared with herbaria in French Guiana and the United States. A detailed trip report, including information on all samples obtained, will be provided to ARS.
