Research Project: Improved diagnostics and quantification assays for Verticillium species important to California Agriculture

Location: Crop Improvement and Protection Research

Project Number: 5305-22000-012-30
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Oct 01, 2012
End Date: Jun 30, 2015

Objective:
The objective of the project is to further develop molecular diagnostic techniques we are currently working on to broaden their utility to the regulatory and diagnostic infrastructure in California and else where in the USA.

Approach:
We have developed a real time PCR molecular diagnostic procedure for quantification of Verticillium dahliae in the soil that is highly accurate and have preliminary data on a diagnostic marker system for two additional Verticillium spp. The objective of this project is to validate the marker system for the other two species by comparing the results of the molecular assay with traditional soil plating as well as expand the sequence database we have to include marker development for additional species.
