Research Project:
Characterization of local cacao populations
Location: Tropical Crops and Germplasm Research
Project Number: 6635-21000-051-01
Project Type:
Trust
Start Date: Jan 01, 2013
End Date: Dec 31, 2014
Objective:
1. Characterize introduced and naturalized Puerto Rican cacao populations using morphological descriptors and genetic molecular markers (SNPs).
2. Estimate genetic diversity in sampled populations, identify unique germplasm and incorporate genetically diverse cacao to fill gaps in existing USDA-ARS NPGS cacao collection.
Approach:
Identify, locate (GPS), describe and collect cacao tree leaf samples from as many agro-ecologically diverse locations on the island of Puerto Rico. Using standard morphological descriptors as well as a panel of ~100 SNP genetic molecular markers, characterize sampled cacao populations. Identify unique germplasm and graft trees for inclusion into germplasm collection.
