Research Project: Analysis of Clinal Variation in Maize: Implementation of An Experimental Framework for Studying Crop Adaptation

Location: Plant Science Research

Project Number: 6070-21220-015-02
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Apr 01, 2013
End Date: Mar 31, 2015

Objective:
Develop or improve models and technologies for climate mitigation or adaptation: Application of classical/conventional breeding and/or new technologies that utilize recent advances in genomic sequence information to develop new plant varieties and animal breeding lines that are adapted to changing climates and maximize greenhouse gas mitigation potential.

Approach:
Create a novel method called Response to Artificial Selection Mapping to identify genes controlling plant adaptation to climate. Develop models to predict the influence of genes and geoclimatic factors limiting temperate adaptation. This will be done by combining DNA marker and sequence analysis and field evaluations of experimental corn populations across a range of environments.
