Research Project: Development of Oxygenated Phosphine Fumigation Treatment for Postharvest Control of Quarantined Pests

Objective:
Develop oxygenated phosphine fumigation treatment to control insect pests that affect export of U.S. fruits to international markets.

Approach:
To utilize a cooperative effort between USDA-ARS and UC Davis to develop oxygenated phosphine fumigation treatments to control insect pests on a variety of fresh commodities. Laboratory experiments as well as large scale fumigation tests will be conducted to control a variety of insect pests including western flower thrips, lettuce aphid, and light brown apple moth. Impact of fumigation on postharvest quality of fresh products including lettuce, broccoli, strawberries, apples, and grapes will also be evaluated.
