DEVELOPMENT AND UTILIZATION OF GENETIC MARKERS AND MAPS FOR BREEDING PERENNIAL FORAGE, RANGE, AND TURF PLANTS OF THE WESTERN U.S.
Location: Forage and Range Research
Project Number: 5428-21000-014-24
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 15, 2012
End Date: Sep 14, 2017
Sequence genes of key forage, range, and turf plants of the western U.S. and develop assays that will be implemented for high-through put genotyping and gene expression analysis of experimental and applied breeding populations that display heritable variation in rhizome development, fall and winter forage quality, salinity tolerance, winter hardiness, heading and flowering date, turf quality, and mineral uptake.
DNA samples from experimental populations and applied breeding programs are purified, concentrated, genotyped, and sequenced using a combination of technically precise procedures and sophisticated genomic instruments. The resulting data are processed through a pipeline of bioinformatics software using multi-processor computer workstations and clusters.
