Research Project: MOLECULAR SYSTEMATICS OF PERUVIAN FLIES (DIPTERA)

Location: Systematic Entomology

Project Number: 1245-22000-262-02
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 15, 2012
End Date: Sep 14, 2017

Objective:
The objective of this cooperative research project is: 1) to develop DNA based hypotheses of relationships (phylogeny) for fruit flies and other flies from Peru; and 2) to investigate the use of DNA sequence data to diagnose these species.

Approach:
ARS and the Centro de Ecologia y Biodiversidad will collect samples of Peruvian flies and jointly train students to make additional collections. ARS will extract, sequence, and analyze DNA from these samples for use in ongoing systematic studies of fruit flies and other flies, including analyses of phylogenetic relationships and diagnosis of species. Results and data will be shared with CEBIO and made available to the scientific community.
