Research Project: Quantifying the Spatial Location of Small-scale Land Management Changes in Large Watersheds Using Hydrological Modeling

Location: Watershed Physical Processes Research Unit

Project Number: 6408-13000-023-25
Project Type: Reimbursable

Start Date: Oct 01, 2012
End Date: Dec 31, 2014

Objective:
Specific objectives of the proposal are to: (i) simulate water runoff, and total sediment and nutrient loads from small gauged watersheds under a range of practices using field scale APEX model, (ii) develop a methodology to simulate the impact of BMPs for reducing water runoff, sediments and nutrients losses from small watersheds using field scale APEX model, (iii) simulate the total sediment and nutrients loads, and runoff of the Muskingum watershed using the SWAT model by using the APEX output information in i and ii above, (iv) identify the socio/economic constraints in terms of the effectiveness of BMPs to improve soil and water quality in the watersheds using the APEX model, and (v) integrate these into new NRCS Nutrient Trading Tool that is being developed.

Approach:
NAEW watershed, weather, and land use data will be analyzed to investigate scaling from small to large watersheds. Additionally, the NAEW data will be used for small and large scale watershed modeling studies. Other non-NAEW data will be used for modeling large basins in Ohio.
