Research Project: WHEAT-HESSIAN FLY INTERACTION AND PLANT RESISTANCE MECHANISMS

Objective:
Elucidate biochemical pathways for wheat resistance to the Hessian fly; and identify effectors of Hessian fly larvae that control virulence/avirulence to wheat.

Approach:
Use microarrays, real-time PCR, and metabolic profiling to identify candidate genes from wheat that are potentially critical for wheat resistance to Hessian fly, and use RNAi gene silencing to confirm their roles in wheat resistance. Use genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS), proteomic analysis, and RNA seq to identify candidate genes that are potentially important for Hessian fly virulence and/or avirulence, and use RNAi gene silencing and other methods to confirm their involvement in Hessian fly interaction with wheat.
