Research Project: USE OF ARS METHOD FOR QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS OF BETA-GLUCAN

Location: Plant Polymer Research

Project Number: 3620-44000-051-01
Project Type: Nonfunded Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Apr 01, 2012
End Date: Jun 30, 2012

Objective:
Training the ARS methodology developed for the quantitative analysis of beta-glucan.

Approach:
A new spectrometric technique for the quantitative analysis of beta-glucan was developed by ARS scientists and published in Journal of Food Composition and Analysis in 2006 and in Cereal Chemistry in 2008. The Cooperator is a commercial vendor of glucan products who would like to adopt this methodology for quality control of their food products. This will be achieved through initial analysis of some of Cooperator’s samples by ARS using this technique and by visit of Cooperator’s employee(s) at NCAUR to learn the analysis technique. Subsequently, the Cooperator will set up the required instrumentation for the analysis of beta-glucan using this technique in its own facility.
