Research Project: AQUATIC WEED MANAGEMENT

Location: Invasive Plant Research Laboratory

Project Number: 6629-22000-011-44
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Mar 01, 2012
End Date: Sep 30, 2013

Objective:
1. Resurvey aquatic vegetation in water bodies that were surveyed during the previous agreement periods in order to determine: a) the expansion of invasive plant populations and, b) their effects on native aquatic ecosystems. 2. Educate and provide public with aquatic vegetation control options based on scientific information gathered during the past several years by organizing public workshops and outreach programs, and submitting research papers for publishing in scientific journals.

Approach:
Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Research Station (CAES) now have many years of surveillance data on 218 water bodies in the State of Connecticut. Most of the vegetation survey results are being incorporated in CAES website (www.ct.gov/caes/iapp). During this proposed agreement period, lakes previously visited and identified as important in terms of the rapidity of invasive plant expansion and their impact on native vegetation will be resurveyed and the research information gathered will be incorporated in the website for public to view. During this period workshops and outreach programs will also be organized to educate general public as well as other organizations responsible for maintaining water bodies in various parts of the State of Connecticut. Research results from previous agreement periods will be submitted to scientific journals for publication.
