Research Project: ON-FARM VALIDATION OF CULTURAL PRACTICE ADJUSTMENTS TO IMPROVE WHITE MOLD MANAGEMENT IN DRY BEAN IRRIGATION SYSTEMS

Location: Sunflower Research

Project Number: 5442-21220-023-72
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jul 01, 2011
End Date: Jun 30, 2012

Objective:
To investigate the roles of cultural practices (irrigation intervals and systems – furrow, sprinkler, fertilizer rate), and timely application of multi-action pesticides in reducing damage from Sclerotinia sclerotiorum to Phaseolus vulgaris cultivars with varying degrees of resistance (plant architecture, interspecific resistance).

Approach:
This project (Year 3 of 3) will conduct replicated field trials in white mold-infested and inoculated nurseries and grower fields to investigate the roles and value of cultural practice modification within an Integrated Pest Management context that compares different pinto bean cultivars, irrigation systems and intervals, fertility levels, and fungicide effects. The study will be conducted during 2011 at various sites in Colorado (furrow and/or sprinkler irrigated). Field data will include plant stand, flowering date, disease intensity, yield, seed size, and economic impacts.
