Research Project: Genetics of Host-Pathogen Interactions Between Mycosphaerella Graminicola and Wheat

Location: Crop Production and Pest Control Research

Project Number: 3602-22000-017-01
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Sep 22, 2011
End Date: Sep 21, 2016

Objective:
Make crosses and test wheat lines for resistance to Septoria tritici blotch in the field or greenhouse. Test resistance genes for durability when exposed to Indiana populations of the pathogens in the field.

Approach:
Crosses will be made between resistant and susceptible lines of wheat and progenies developed to test the mode of inheritance of new or unknown resistance genes. Field testing of resistance will be performed by planting hill plots or small test plots and allowing for natural infection or by inoculating with specific Indiana isolates of the pathogen depending on the experiment. Plants will be scored for disease reaction and resistant lines retained for future analysis.
