Research Project: A Rapid Assay System for Transgenes That Confer Resistance to Don and Fusarium Head Blight Project Number: 0500-00053-003-37
Project Type: Grant

Start Date: Apr 24, 2011
End Date: Apr 23, 2014

Objective:
Project 1: Characterize the chitin receptor from barley and establish the molecular tools to manipulate this pathway to enhance basal immunity against FHB. Project 2: Use the super-virulent AGL1 strain of Agrobacterium tumefaciens to transform the barley cultivar Conlon.

Approach:
Project 1: (i) Isolate and characterize barley homologs of the chitin receptor; (ii) Identify the authentic barley chitin receptor through functional complementation of defined mutants in Physcomitrella and Arabidopsis; and (iii) Create constructs for the suppression of the chitin receptor in transgenic barley. Project 2: Barley plants will be characterized for the presence and expression of the selectable marker gene and the transgene. Plants will be propagated, allowed to set seed and the progeny assayed for resistance to FHB in controlled and contained conditions.
