Research Project: Collaborative Cattle Research Between ARS and Ndsu-Hettinger Research Extension Center

Location: Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory

Project Number: 5445-21310-002-03
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jun 01, 2011
End Date: May 31, 2016

Objective:
Develop feeding strategies to grow steers from weaning to slaughter on high forage diets with supplemental concentrates, and determine the effects on animal growth, carcass and beef quality and fatty acid concentrations in the beef.

Approach:
The USDA-ARS, Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory (NGPRL) will cooperate with North Dakota State University (NDSU) through its Hettinger Research Extension Center to conduct collaborative cattle supplementation trials comparing different types and amounts of supplementation of cattle on basal rations of forage. Cattle growth rate and feed use efficiency will be determined along with carcass and beef quality and concentrations of fatty acids in beef.
