Research Project: ABATEMENT MEASURES FOR REDUCING ODOR, VOC, AND GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS FROM ANIMAL FEEDING OPERATIONS

Location: Environmental Management Research

Project Number: 5438-41630-001-02
Project Type: Specific Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Jan 01, 2011
End Date: Dec 31, 2012

Objective:
To develop abatement alternatives for reducing odor and volitile organic compounds (VOC) emissions from animal feeding operations.

Approach:
Manure additives including enzymes of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and soybean peroxidase (SBP) will be added to wastewater from swine and beef feeding lagoons at varying hydrogen peroxide concentrations. Headspace samples will be analyzed for VOC and greenhouse gas concentrations. VOC and greenhouse gas emission rates and treatment effectiveness will be quantified and reported.
