Research Project: RESEARCH TO ADDRESS ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS FACED BY THE U.S. DAIRY INDUSTRY

Location: U.S. Dairy Forage Research Center

Project Number: 3655-12630-001-00
Project Type: Appropriated

Start Date: Mar 06, 2004
End Date: Feb 04, 2008

Objective:
Research will be conducted to improve nutrient management, minimize emissions and control pathogens at all stages in the dairy production system. Information gained in these investigations will be transferred to dairy producers and their advisors through education, outreach, and technical assistance activities.

Approach:
Dairy farms in Wisconsin and the rest of the United States face a number of challenges, including protection of environmental quality and human health. Research is needed to develop management practices, treatment technologies, and decision tools that will allow producers and their advisors to address these problems in a cost-effective manner. Establishment of the Institute for Environmentally Integrated Dairy Management at Marshfield, WI will bring together scientific expertise, facilities, and a land base that can be used to provide solutions to many of the environmental problems faced by the dairy industry.
