Research Project:
MANURE AND NUTRIENT MANAGEMENT PRACTICES TO PROTECT HUMAN HEALTH AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Location: Agroecosystem Management Research
Project Number: 5440-32000-007-01
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Jun 01, 2000
End Date: May 31, 2005
Objective:
To cover cost of field operations, harvesting, and compensating landowners for yield losses associated with research activities. Support graduate student stipends and salaries of individuals supervised by University cooperators. Provide supplies, repairs, and maintenance at field site and associated research fields.
Approach:
A series of on-farm studies will be conducted in cooperation with producers and agricultural consultants, agribusiness interests, and colleagues to address a variety of issues related to spatial variability. The various types of spatial variability (soil, vegetation, yield, etc) will be evaluated to determine the appropriate expertise needed to more fully characterize the situation. A team approach will be used to develop management options. Management tools and decision aids for producers and land managers will be developed to address specific problems (i.e., fate of manure borne pathogens and antibiotics, manure utilization, nutrient availability and fertilizer recommendations, interpretation of yield maps, irrigation timing and distribution, etc.). Discussions with producers and agribusiness partners will be used to identify problems, develop integrated approaches, and consolidate resources.
