Objective:
Characterize the genetic diversity of Carya using molecular genetic tools. Develop new molecular genetic procedures as needed and appropriate. The long range objective is to develop markers linked to traits, facilitating selection of improved genotypes of pecan. Use the information developed to guide the conservation of Carya populations and the breeding, selection and deployment of germplasm.
Approach:
Microsatellite primers developed in previous research will be used to characterize accessions at the level of species, population, and individual, and to verify questions of parentage. New primers will be developed as needed. Other techniques, such as Genotyping By Sequencing (GBS) will be pursued to develop sequenced based methods, such as Single Nucleotide Polymorphic DNA (SNPs) for use in profiling as well as identification of Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) through mapping selected controlled cross populations.
