Research Project: Genetics of Resistance to Septoria Diseases in Wheat

Location: Crop Production and Pest Control Research

Project Number: 5020-21220-019-005-S
Project Type: Non-Assistance Cooperative Agreement

Start Date: Aug 15, 2015
End Date: Aug 14, 2020

Objective:
Make crosses and analyze the genetics of resistance to septoria disease of wheat in the field or greenhouse. Analyze genetic or genomic variation in the pathogen if necessary to better understand resistance.

Approach:
Crosses will be made between resistant and susceptible lines of wheat and progenies developed to test the mode of inheritance of existing, new or unknown resistance genes. Plants will be scored for disease reaction and resistant lines retained for future analysis. Isolates of the pathogens Mycosphaerella graminicola (aka Zymoseptoria tritici) and Phaeosphaeria (aka Parastagonospora or Stagonospora) nodorum will be tested for ability to infect wheat plants containing different resistance genes if necessary to better understand the resistance in wheat.
